Are you looking for some creative cleaning advice? The beloved baker Nancy Birtwhistle, who placed first in the fifth season of The Great British Bake Off, has long been sharing her eco-friendly, cost-effective tips for cleaning home things fast.
Nancy offers simple DIY cleaning solutions and kettle descaling instructions that anybody may follow at home. Check out her recommendations below.
1. Descaling a kettle

Are you unsure of how to restore the shine to your kettle? Nancy shows how to descale a kettle quickly and simply on her Instagram page. She suggests twisting a lemon over the nozzle and letting it sit for a few minutes. It’s not only very simple to accomplish, but it’s also an environmentally friendly cleaning option.
2. Copper and brass cleaning

Nancy has been manufacturing her own pan cleansers for years because a lot of them include harsh chemicals. “My recipe requires no scouring or scratching, is quick to clean, and only costs about 80p to clean a full set of pans,” the woman claims.

3. Deep-cleaning tiled floors
Nancy says in this little video that she has been looking for a robust floor cleaner. You’ll need 150g of citric acid, 75ml of water, 20 drops of eucalyptus essential oil, and 25ml of eco-friendly dishwashing liquid to produce this environmentally friendly solution. “It costs 10p for each bucket wash, works great, and does the job,” she says.
4. How to whiten your sheets

Nancy says, “All you’re going to need is table salt, citric acid, and a sunny day” to make your linens look whiter than ever. Nancy says all you have to do is let the linens and pillowcases drip dry outside after soaking them for twenty minutes. You’ll be astounded by the outcome!
5. Eco-friendly laundry detergent

How much does your laundry detergent cost? Eco-friendly solutions cost up to 72p every wash, while my own “eco-blend” costs only 10–13p. The supermarket brand is more expensive. I’ve tested it out,” Nancy explains, providing her followers with a detailed how-to for creating their own.
6. Cleaning your jewellery

Use Nancy’s creative homemade cleaning solution to restore your jewellery to its original, shining condition. She suggests using one tablespoon of bicarbonate of soda, boiling water, and aluminium foil (which can be recycled or used again later) in her Instagram video. You only need to let your jewellery soak for it to come out looking brand new. How about trying it out?
7. Removing bobbles from a jumper

Nancy says that cutting off bobbles from a pullover with scissors gently and then tossing the item in the washing machine is her fuss-free, easy method. “This is my favourite jumper, and even though it’s fairly new, friction is causing it to bobble under the arms,” she remarks.
Nancy cuts out the loose bobbles and lets the jumper soak inside out in a bowl of eco-friendly dish soap for an hour. She then gave it a quick rinse in fabric conditioner and ran it through the washing machine. The jumper appeared brand-new!
8. Cleaning the toilet
Nancy shared another brilliant technique about making her own toilet cleaning. She puts 125 millilitres of water and 250 grammes of citric acid in a small pan to produce her solution. She then whisks everything together to create a thin, clear syrup. Nancy adds 10–20 drops of tea tree or lemon oil and pours it into a spray bottle after letting it cool.
